Finding software is easy, find software that lives up to it potential is not. My experience with the free software has been across the board in reliability and ease of use. When it comes to software it's really about defining needed functionality versus the cost to determine what value you are getting.
The software packages and programs referenced here are ones you will have to determine the appropriateness for your use. The summaries or features will give you as much insight as I know or can find out about the programs
