*****Article 1: Learning Music Principles The idea of learning music principles and the impressions given by many students are very insightful. Many believe learning music to be hard and an overwhelming concept. Recently I heard a musician proclaim, "Music is very hard to learn, but with time and commitment I will be able to master music and that is what learning music has taught me." Learning doesn't need to be as hard as it is made out to be. Learning in an effective way is how one can overcome this mind set. Why is it Hard to Learn Music Why do students believe that it is hard to learn music even when they have the basic ideas? It may be in the wrong approach to learning these principles. Using the white keys on a keyboard you will learn a C major scale. Playing them with a fingering that was shown to you. Then you are shown a new scale that has a sharp or flat and you are starting over again without learning the basic music math behind the scale. The proper way is to learn the scale formula and use it to learn those new scales. This is what makes it easier. You get to know the music theory and apply it as you learn these scales. This is a much better way to learn than as if you spent a large amount of time learning just one scale without the principals. For many the hard part is getting rid of thinking its hard, and finding out that its manageable process. The Eureka moment is in learning that applying principals is what truly gives you the ability to learn music easily. A form of this question was recently asked in the survey with some varying results. It's easy to listen to the radio and download our favorite song for a under a dollar. It's not surprising that we have a love for music as it's such a basic core to our life. However, many of us the actual playing or creating of our own music it's a complete mystery. Learning music is often one of the most frustrating experiences we have as a child let alone as an adult. When we do actually make the leap to performing and playing it then becomes one of the most enjoyable occurrences of our life. Survey Results With such a diverse set of answers to the survey one theme became obvious: "I want to learn how to play . . . " You can insert anything from a musical instrument to a style of music. The desire came down to improve their music knowledge and music skills. The fact is that much of the basic principals are not well taught and pieces and parts can be found in many places. What came across in these answers was a need for music theory to be presented in an easier to understand method than the good old text book method. There were even concerns with the method books taking to long to teach notes. Here's an example that you might run across. A method book will teach you a couple of notes like a half note and a quarter note. Then might come back at another time and teach you eight notes building a little bit at a time to learn the basic note structure. What if you learned all the notes types whole note to sixteenth. Such as their relationship to each other their immediate differences in presentation and how they work together. Then got to apply them to songs. Could you believe that you would learn faster by knowing the big picture first? I'd dare to answer yes! And might even add an explicative to emphasize it! Learning Fundamental Music Theory When exploring music sites and references most of the information forgets that many of may not have learned some of the really fundamental basics of music and don't understand what they are telling us. Self Taught or Poorly Taught Issues Back to the survey. It appears that many would be musicians are trying to teach themselves music.
