Email 1: Subject Line: Learning Music like the great composers. Do you know why that the great composers were taught by theorists and not note by note. Hi {!firstname_fix}, I wanted to drop you a quick line about learning music theory and music principles. See, the problem is that 90% of the people teaching some course on learning piano, guitar, or whatever out there have it all wrong. They all teach with the same similar methods often the note by note approach… and unfortunately the results just aren't there. I know first hand, because I've scoured the internet looking for the easiest way to learn to play myself. (and trust me, it was amazing how much horrible stuff was out there for the independent student, but there is some good stuff as well) Well check it out: I found an amazing one year music course that absolutely blew me away. This course guarantees you'll be able to learn and master about 4 years worth of what traditional teaching covers for fundamentals to intermediate music theory. You print out only a few of the work sheets and maybe a few other pages to help you build your own music theory book. Now I don't know if you know this, but.. One of the basic learning methods this course uses is in the doing or physical application of the principles learned. That's what homework was suppose to do for you in school. This is a lot more fun. Because your not doing problems your building your own music book. I'm starting to get what is meant by getting it down cold. You have use all three of your senses of seeing, hearing, and physically working with the principles. Hoplink here Learning music is often one of the most frustrating experiences we have as a child let alone as an adult. When we do actually make the leap to performing and playing it then it becomes one of the most enjoyable occurrences of our life. For many this is a long and laborious road. For those that study music principles it's a shortcut to success. And it's not as hard as you might think. Ask successful musicians . . . For those that have been down this road and figured out what knowing principles and theory of music are all about they get it. Ask the big question and they're thinking "if you don't know why you need to know the theory then you are going to be a long time learning to be truly a good musician." Spelling vs. reading It's like someone teaching you to spell words and then trying to read a book by spelling out each letter of the word: t . h . e. d . o. g. j. u. m. p. e. d. to read the book. Isn't it a lot easier to read: "The dog jumped" as words and phrases. This is just like notes verses chords. Scales give you letters (notes) to create words (chords). String those chords together and your telling a story. Sure it's more complicated than that, but now you get the idea that you need to know this stuff. Memorizing vs. Principles. . . This is the same concept that a lot of musicians struggle with because they think that 2 plus 3 equals 5 because they learned to memorize it but can't add 24 plus 62 because they never learned the addition principle correctly. If you are weak at all in this area, this is where you want to tune up and get solid.
